The top lifts like a folder. There are 4 slits (1 each corner) that hold the document (paper or card stock) on place.

Well, yes, I guess you could. However, one certificate would not be visible. There is only slots on one side of the folder. I inserted one certificate per folder. I hope this helps.

Q: Any chance this could be used for a document that is 8.75 x 11.5?

Yes, if you use a tacky dot or piece of tape to hold it in place. I use them to hold wedding vows for marriage ceremonies...using a tacky dot on the back of each sheet to hold the two sheets in place...face to face.
