OK please refer to the installation steps as below: 1.Put the foam into left stand(digital version) 2.Place PS5 upside down to lock screw 3.Place vertical to install right stand 4.Place horizontal to plug in power cable Hope it can help you!

Q: Does the system need to be in rest mode to charge the controllers? Or will it charge no matter what?

You are able to charge the controllers in rest mode and when the is console on. You can even use a separate USB wall adapter to power the device so you free up the USB-C port on the front of the PS5. Hope this helps.
