The straps' length is 13.4", it will be long enough.

You san smush it quite a bit. It is not rigid. Of course, it can only get so small, but it definitely can hold some items and still go easily under an airplane seat.

Q: Is the bottom durable? Able to hold a half gallon water bottle?

This bag is very well constructed. We gave this to a friend going through chemotherapy so she could pack what she needed for the day. It is very roomy and has many pockets as well as an inside sleeve for a laptop. To answer your question, a half gallon water bottle will fit on the inside and I believe the construction will hold the weight of the water bottle. I guess it just depends on what else is going into the bag, if it’s heavy also, then of course it will wear. You can always return it if it doesn’t meet your satisfaction. Our friend loved it.

Q: Can this bag be personalized with a teacher’s name?

I'm assuming you could put a teacher name by embroidery or something that would make it stick really well without falling off or being able to pull.off.
