Franz Kafka: The Drawings

Less than meets the eye
I’m not convinced by this book that, as visual artist, Kafka is or tries to be more than a dabbler. At any rate, these drawIngs, as drawIngs, come nowhere near the greatness of his fictions, as fictions. Even as supplements to his sometimes harrowing diary entries they don’t quite measure up.

It depends…
If you’ve read everything that Kafka’s ever written, sought out other writers who draw inspiration from him, been to the Kafka museum in Prague, stopped by his house and all of the Kafka monuments around Czechia, visited his grave and talked to it, basically did all the borderline psychotic stuff like I have, then you need this book because you need this book. But if you’re not so obsessive and lonely and you’re kind of on the fence about buying this for $30-$50, or you’re thinking, “I haven’t read much Kafka and when I did I kind of forced it and didn’t REALLY get it but I know he’s a big deal so maybe if I look at his drawings then it’s all going to come together,” then let me be objective here. This book is just a bunch of meaningless scribbles that the Literary Estate of Max Brod is looking to capitalize on. And with that statement you should do as you please.PS. The Kafka museum in Prague is a hoax. Not a single original anything, all facsimiles, and a stupid “creepy” atmosphere. Don’t go. Unless you’re like me, then go.
