The Girl from the Channel Islands: A WWII Novel

Disappointing
I thought the book was a true love story between the 4 main characters. Hedy, Kurt, Anton and Dorothea who came alive through the author’s writing. The background story of the war never took over the book for me.. The Chapters were long and confusing as to how much time had elapsed from section to section. Chapters were untitled at times and left the reader in a war zone without boundaries. The ending was like a crash course in everyone lives happily ever after.I did find it interesting to learn about the Channel Islands and the role they played in British history during the war. This I found in the epilogue. There are wonderful WW2historical fiction books like the Nightingale, Lilac Girls, The Alice Network and many others., ... I found this story paled as a competitor to these 5 star books

Wonderful Read
Jenny Lecoat's book is one of the best I have ever read! It's a story of desperation, courage , friendship, and most of all love. All of her characters, except for the Nazis, exhibit every one of these . It's a great book based on a true story during the time of World War II. It keeps you wanting to turn the page quickly to find out what the characters do next. I will admit that many nights I fell asleep and awoke with the book lying on my face and my light still on. I highly recommend this book for anyone who likes to read about what actually happened to people in the Channel Islands during the war.

An education!
Have unswerving admiration for the Channel folks who endured those years of Nazi occupation on those beautiful islands. And even for some of the German soldiers who found themselves fighting on what they rightly perceived was surely the wrong side.

An Amazing Story
I became very wrapped up In the story of The Girl from the Channel Islands. It is a very emotional and thought provoking novel about a little known aspect of World War II taking place on a small island between France and Great Britain. It is the story of the island's people being under German rule during World War II and how the islanders reacted to this. It is also a love story, a story of intrigue, a story of deprivation, and a story of finding a way to exist for years under the German occupation. And it is a story of a German soldier becoming disenchanted with the German occupation and having to face up to the horrors being inflicted on Jews and other conquered peoples and taking a stand to assist some of the islanders, one of which was a woman he came to know and love. This is a great book and I very much recommend it.

Interesting sideline to WW II
Not the best written book I have ever read, but interesting story based on actual events (per the author) of the German occupation of the British Channel Islands. Personal stories of interesting characters the reader can care about, and recommended for readers who would like to know more about this small corner of the second world war.

The cover is beautiful.
The cover got my attention. Beautiful and inviting photo; I did not finish the book. WW11 is one of my favorite reads. This book takes liberty, I know it's a novel, but the sexual behavior of main characters is unnecessary. I am sorry that authors take that route to sell their book

Great novel of Jewish hiding in WWII
It was easy to get into this novel of World War two. It kept my interest much more than most that I read.

Pretty Good Read
From a historical standpoint this book was interesting and informative. It gave a captivating snapshot of living under Nazi occupation on the Channel Islands. It was well-written, kept you turning the page. However, I did find the characters a bit flat, both those based on real people as well as the fictional ones. What I enjoyed the least were the sudden insertions (albeit few) of smutty passages, which just seemed out of place in this book. To her credit, however, the author kept them brief. I rarely enjoy fiction, but the book engaged me enough to actually read to the end. That says a lot.

The Girl from the Channel Islands
This is a story about a Jewish girl called Hedy, who had escaped to The Jersey Island from Austria just prior to WWII, only to later find the island occupied by The Germans. The occupation was brutal, and being able to speak German she procured a job in the German offices, and there she meets a German Officer called Kurt, who abhorred the Nazi ways and regime. The author describes the occupation of Jersey and how the residents were mistreated, starving, frightened, impoverished, and victimized. Many of the German Police abused their power on the residents of Jersey. Hedy was fortunate to meet a good friend who assisted her during the war, and hid her from the German police when needed. It is a heartbreaking story of love, power, starvation, and through it all, some decency. Hedy and her friend Dory wouldn’t have survived if it wasn’t for the German Officer Kurt. He protected them many times, and ensured that they had some food when he could. This is an excellent story about real human nature, with kindness, love, and even cruelty.
