Undoing Gender

First things first, Judith Butler is scary smart. Her linguist/philosopher credentials can make her a tough read sometimes, but the language she uses here is clear and pure. Undoing Gender provided the first insights into the gendered connections that we all share and how the world understands us through these labels. She connects Foucault to Simone de Beauvoir, Hegel, Freud and beyond. I very much appreciated the depths that Undoing Gender plumbed to connect my experience to everyone else's, and to our common history and struggle. I tend to hightlight and annotate books that I use as reference and this copy is dripping yellow, pink, blue and green.

Judith Butler‘s seminal work on gender allows even the most uneducated individual to comprehend the overlap between sex and gender and what it means for the LGBT community.

Difficult to read at first. Then, I read a lot of writings of transgender people and caught onto the world view and the vocabulary to go along with it, and it got easier to read. I personally found her analysis of gender to be shallow, but since she speaks for many people in the transgender movement, it is an important book to be aware of.

I used this book for a theory presentation. It was absolutely awesome! Judith Butler's argument is strong. Although, some of the arguments were a bit difficult to pick apart, Butler unwinds the gender stereotypes perfectly.

This is a highly readible bunch of essays illustrating Butler's thought. It's a great introduction to her for laymen that do not necessarily read technical jargon (scholareze) easily.

A really great book regarding moving past gender stereotyping (and so much more).

I found it unreadable. We were meant to be reading it for a book group but I threw in the towel. Out of the four of us doing it only the one who suggested it read most of it.

prof butler at her best. very accessible (except for a couple of chapters). her style is extremely elegant and sophisticated, a true pleasure to read. this is an introduction to her work and its applications, since it touches on several real world issues. excellent introduction to gender studies/theory and the work of judith butler
