I currently have a GWF flter in my fridge. I just ordered this and it says MWF on it. Does it fit my GWF fridge?
What should be the tds (total dissolved solids) on a brand new mwf filter?
Why doesn't my GE replacement filter say Smartwater on it?

Works great. Easy install.

Good OEM filters

Good OEM filters. Fit perfectly. Easy to install and no leakage. While these are more expensive than many non-OEM offerings, if you look closely at those non-OEM filters, they recommend you change them twice as often, and they do not filter nearly as much as these do. So, you're not saving any money or your health.

Worth paying premium price for GE brand filter

Yes, I find it is worth it to pay the premium price for the genuine GE brand water filter for my GE Monogram fridge and ice maker. I’ve tried the “other” brand to save money but everything works smoothly when I use genuine parts.

Better than the 3rd party versions. I wish it wasn't better - so expensive.

I really wish these lasted longer or weren't so expensive. I have tried buying the 3rd party or non branded versions and I can tell the difference. I wish I didn't so I didn't have to keep buying these.

Great! Buy genuine GE parts!

GREAT! After buying two bad off brand filters that did NOT work I spent the extra $$ for the GE filter. Worked immediately with no problems! Will not buy cheaper filter again. This one is perfect.

Only OEM - generics way too inconsistent

If you are lucky enough to find a generic filter that meets the original filtering standards that's one thing. The fit and quality is a whole other issue. I used to use a Brita before I moved and the new fridge has a water/ice dispenser. Especially now with a new child, we wouldn't mess with the quality of our water. After researching around, the other generic brands were way too hit/miss when it comes to leaks and operation. The other issue is that some did not filter out chemicals or other harmful elements as this filter would - just make the water taste better and give only half the quality. GE's NSF-certified MWF replacement refrigerator water filter--part of the company's SmartWater filtration series--is the improved version of the GWF model. It claims to reduce contaminants like mercury, toxaphene, p-dichlorobenzene, carbofuran, alachlor, benzene, lead, cryptosporidium, and giardia. The question is, since the filter gets changed a few or couple times a year depending on the usage, is it really worth cheaping out just to save about $15 - $20 bucks if that per cartridge? I refuse to have leaks from improper fit, inconsistent flow rate and not to mention cheaper quality build so who know what cheaper materials they may have used inside! Somethings you don't cheap on and this is one of them. I find that stretching the life of these filters is fine. What I do is after my GE profile fridge warns me to replace it, I unscrew it and look down the inlet - if there is no residue or film, I give it a splash with diluted vinegar (not dump it in but essentially a "cleansing rinse") down the inlet. Keep in mind the filter design doesn't just dump the water out so after some shakes over the sink, you can empty out about a 1/4 of the water inside enough to get the diluted vinegar in there. Rinse it out thoroughly then reinstall it. Let it run for another minute or something like 5 cups and that's all. If it does look like a film is building then I replace it.Be your own judge if you want. Look at the size of the inlet hole, the seams along the side where the top mends to the body of the housing, the seal/o-ring by the inlet, the thread size/shape. Also when you do install it, look for any particles that float out in the water. Make sure you also fill the cartridge with water to minimize air bubbles when it first operates. It should feel heavy and the GE filter actually retains much of the water even turned upside down meaning it probably uses the pressure to push the water through the filtering layers. Some generics just poured right out. Generics: I have had some carbon particles, the GE I have not noticed any. These are the variations I have noticed.

Cheap enough, easy to install

I've had my GE fridge for about seven years now. I've watched the price of these filters creep up through the years, and gave into temptation the last time to try out a generic (AquaFresh) model. Here's a summary of my experience with these two products:Aquafresh WF287:The filter didn't feel quite right when installing .. I had to turn it a bit harder than I remembered. Once I began running the water, I immediately noticed black particles (carbon filter bits I suppose) in the water. I think I flushed out about 10 gallons before there were no more noticeable particles in a clean glass. But upon closer examination under good lighting, I could still see a few black specks floating around. I called the company I bought it from (FiltersFast.com) and they sent me a new one.Well ... same thing happened with the second filter. I think I ended up flushing about 20 gallons through this time before I was satisfied it was clean enough to drink. I've had no problems since, but when it came time to replace, no thanks.I don't think this model triggers the replacement light on my frig, but when I hit nine months of use, I decided I no longer wanted to wait to find out. We've been in drought conditions more often than not this past decade in the Southeast, and I hate wasting water. I did put the water on my lawn so it wasn't completely wasted, but still I don't care enough about my lawn to feed it filtered water. :)I don't have a problem with FiltersFast.com, but I don't want another Aquafresh filter.GE MWF:Installed quickly. Water sputters a bit right after installation, but runs clean with no black specks. The directions say to run about 1.5 gallons through to eliminate the sputtering. I think a gallon is enough.Overall, if you compare the price of filtered water right from your frig to bottled water, the GE MWF is still an incredible bargain.I take my own water to work and save probably hundreds of dollars a year. And I am not filling up the landfills with plastic empties.I find the filters last longer than six months, probably about nine months on average before the light kicks on and tells me to buy another.Bottled water is all about marketing. Clean, filtered water is nothing but pure H20, same as the expensive bottled waters. I have better things to do with my money.
